About the Conductor

Alfred J. D’Souza, lovingly known as ‘Alfie’, is best described as the indispensable Conductor of The Stop-Gaps Choral Ensemble. He also has the uncommon distinction of being the Founder, Director, Composer, Lyricist, Sets & Costume Designer and even Choreographer of this group. Under his direction the Ensemble has performed in various cities in India as well as represented the country in international festivals and competitions abroad, including France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Israel and China, winning various accolades and awards to make the nation proud.

Affectionately called the ‘Lightening Conductor’, volatile Alfred struck the Mumbai music scene some twenty years ago and took choral singing to new levels in this city. His eagle eye for perfection and natural flair for interpretation, coupled with spirited conducting, made The Stop–Gaps Choral Ensemble what critics have described as “a choir with a velvet tone, good discipline and finely controlled dynamics”. His brainchild, The Festival Of Festive Music, with choirs converging from different parts of India in December each year, has become a major musical event in this metropolis.

His musical career began at the age of four when he first broadcast over the A.I.R., Madras, singing the then popular song ‘I Understand.’ From a boy soprano of church and school choirs, he has metamorphosed into a rare counter-tenor voice, which he uses to effect in both classical and jazz singing. His theatrical interests have led him to acting in, and directing several plays.

On the academic front, Alfred has a Master’s degree in Social Work, which accounts for his commitment towards social causes and charitable institutions. Besides his many cultural activities, he has a regular job in the Corporate Communications Department of the reputed Tata Power Company Limited, and is Editor of its in-house magazine.
